Standards New Zealand held its inaugural meeting of the New Zealand JTC 1 'Information Technology' (IT) international review group on Tuesday 28 September 2010. The group will provide New Zealand's input into the ISO/IEC JTC 1 committee. Recognising the limited resources available to New Zealand it was agreed that the group should focus on key standardisation areas for New Zealand. These were agreed as:
- software and systems engineering
- programming languages and interfaces
- interconnection of IT equipment
- IT security techniques
- biometrics
- distributed application platforms and services
- corporate governance of information and communication technologies (ICT).
Other emerging areas of focus were identified as:
- automatic identification and data capture techniques
- green ICT
- smart grid
- digital content management
- energy efficient data centres
- accessibility and user interfaces in ICT.
This new group will provide an opportunity for New Zealand stakeholders to form a New Zealand position on matters that are being considered by the ISO/IEC JTC 1 committee. The group will meet twice a year and are considering hosting open forum sessions to discuss key activities occurring within JTC1, open to any interested party in the ICT sector.
The group endorsed a New Zealand representative to attend the upcoming JTC1 plenary meeting in November.
ISO/IEC JTC 1 was formed in 1987 and has written over 2000 Standards in the field of information technology. They cover topics from biometrics to software engineering and corporate governance of IT.
