A 'watermark' appears in the background of each page of all electronic Standards as a reminder that the content is the copyright of Standards New Zealand. Blue text on the inside margin of each page provides a short summary of the licence conditions.

Previously all electronic Standards (PDFs) were password protected. Our customers found it a nuisance to enter a password each time they wanted to use the PDF and some had trouble remembering their password. This is the reason why we now use the 'watermark' as a means of protecting copyright for all New Zealand Standards.

Standards New Zealand is a self-funded Crown-owned entity and protecting our copyright is paramount. We rely on the revenue from selling our documents to fund the ongoing operation of Standards New Zealand, and enable development of Standards to continue.

Copyright, or the exclusive right to copy, exists for all documents published by Standards New Zealand. Standards New Zealand retains the exclusive right to make copies of these documents. When you purchase a Standards New Zealand document, in either electronic or hardcopy form, you are not entitled to make further copies yourself unless you have applied for a copyright licence that specifically allows this.

If you copy a Standard without permission or paying a copyright fee, you are breaching copyright. Making copies of Standards New Zealand documents without permission can carry serious legal consequences. In addition to the usual range of civil remedies available to the copyright owner, under the Copyright Act every person who infringes copyright may be liable to a fine not exceeding $50,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 months.

Request permission to copy all or part of a Standard by emailing copyright@standards.co.nz or faxing or by mailing your request to us.

When you purchase a Standards New Zealand document, in either electronic or hardcopy form, you are not entitled to make further copies yourself unless the licence conditions specifically allow for this so it pays to check before you start copying any Standards content. No. You may only print one hard copy of any document for your company's internal purposes. To get a Copyright Licence to print further copies, please email us at copyright@standards.co.nz.

You can give multiple staff members access to Standards through a network licence or an Online Library service subscription.

Please email details about the Standard, page number, and diagram to enquiries@standards.co.nz or call 0800 782 632 during business hours – we aim to correct the placement of the watermark as quickly as possible so it does not cover a diagram and we will provide you with a replacement PDF.

Any use of Standards New Zealand, ISO or IEC logos is strictly controlled and very limited. Requests must be made in writing including details of the purpose of use, placement and so on. Please email enquiries@standards.co.nz.

Providing you use no more than 3% of the material content of the Standard, this is usually permitted. Please email details to copyright@standards.co.nz.

• Hard copy is the printed version of the Standard.
• Subscription is the ability to view Standards online via our website's online library. This facility incurs an annual subscription fee. Standards should not be downloaded but one copy can be printed by each authorised user.
• Networking refers to a Standard that is stored on an organisation's server for access by staff. A network licensing fee is payable for this service.
• PDF is the electronic format of the Standard – these can be purchased via our website and downloaded to a personal computer.
